A reinforced concrete cantilever retaining wall consists of a relatively thin stem and a base slab. The stem may have constant thickness along the length or may be tapered based on economic and construction criteria. The base is divided into two parts, the heel and toe. The heel is the part of the base under the back-fill. This system uses much less concrete than monolithic gravity wall, but requires more design and careful construction. Where the ground level is higher on one side retaining walls are put in place as the higher side of the wall imposes lateral forces. Forces can have an impact on the high side causing it to collapse also surcharge loads can also be contributing factor. Overall all materials involved must be considered to ensure the lateral load is considered to ensure a perfect design. If the retaining wall is longer than 6m expansions joints may need to be introduced to prevent cracks developing.
